ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team bounced back from a three-set loss to Northwestern Friday night with a 3-1 win over St. Kate's Saturday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn.
The Wildcats won the first set 25-19, but CSB came back to win the next three 25-22, 25-18 and 26-24. Saint Benedict is now 9-9 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC.
St. Kate's (11-12, 0-6) took an early lead in the first set at 5-4, and never gave that lead up. CSB closed the gap at 8-6, and again at 11-8, but the Wildcats were able to hold on for the 25-19 win. Saint Benedict, however, came out strong in set two, and started the game on a 5-1 run thanks to a pair of kills from
Briana Schmiesing. St. Kate's tied the game at 8-8 and took a brief lead, but Saint Benedict went on a 5-0 run to go up 19-13 and held on from there.
After a close start in set three, CSB opened an 8-4 lead thanks to a service ace by
Megan Pekarek. The Wildcats got within 9-7, but CSB rattled off eight straight points thanks to kills from Schmiesing and Hoover and took a 17-7 lead. St. Kate's went on a 7-0 run of its own late in the match, but CSB held on for the win.
CSB led throughout much of the final set, but St. Kate's tied the game at 15-15, and again at 23-23 after CSB had taken a 23-21 lead on a kill by
Liz Schultz. A kill from Hoover made it 24-23, but the Wildcats tied the game again. Kills from Hoover and
Meghan Koop ended the set – and the match – in CSB's favor.
Schmiesing finished with 17 kills to lead CSB, which had 57 total kills. Hoover added 12 kills and Koop finished with 10.
Megan Pekarek had 46 assists and 14 digs and
Haley LaValle led the team with 17 digs. Koop also added 16 digs.
CSB is back at home Wednesday, Oct. 12, when it hosts Hamline at 7 p.m. in Claire Lynch. Wednesday's game marks on of CSB's final two regular-season home games for 2016.
