Hedin scores 10th goal of season as CSB falls to Gusties

ST. PETER, Minn. – Taylor Hedin's scoring total hit double digits Tuesday afternoon, but a pair of first-half goals by Gustavus was enough to lead the Gusties to a 2-1 win over the College of Saint Benedict soccer team Tuesday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn.

Hedin's 10th goal of the season came in the 54th minute against Gustavus when Jane Koch sent a pass through the Gustie defenders to help set Hedin up on a breakaway. Hedin, a senior from Andover, is the first CSB soccer player to score 10 or more goals in a season since 2010 when Heather Beshears scored 13 goals.

Saint Benedict had several chances to tie the game in the final minutes, including shots by Hedin, Nicole Newman, Jessica Trossen and Koch that were saved by Gustie goalie Ashley Becker and a shot in the 89th minute by Brooke DeMets that was blocked, but couldn't capitalize.

Gustavus (6-4-2, 3-4) scored all the goals it would need in the first half against CSB. The Gusties got on the board in the 11th minute when they scored off a corner kick, and scored the eventual game-winner in the 17th minute on a rebound off a blocked shot.

CSB (7-4-2, 3-3-1) outshot the Gusties 15-9, including a 10-5 margin in shots on net, but Becker had nine saves. Heather Kaluzniak finished with two saves and Kendall Koenen added one for Saint Benedict.

CSB is back in action and back at home Saturday, Oct. 15, when it hosts Concordia College at 1:45 p.m. The start time was pushed back to accommodate the refs, who are also working at the Saint John's soccer game that day.
