ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Heading in to Saturday's game against Concordia,
Mara Flaherty hadn't scored yet in her college career. Now, she's scored twice.
Flaherty scored two goals within 16 seconds of each other, including the eventual game-winner, to heal lead CSB to a 5-1 win over the Cobbers Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph. Three other players scored for CSB (8-4-2, 4-3-1), which improved its home record to 6-1-1.
Flaherty's first collegiate goal came one second in to the 10
th minute of the game when she took a rebound off a shot from
Jane Koch and sent it into the net past the Cobbers' keeper. Her second goal came 16 seconds later when she got the ball on the right side of the net and sent it past the keeper again.
Concordia (3-8-3, 1-6-1) made it a one-goal game in the 31
st minute when Alexandra Jones scored unassisted on a breakaway, but Saint Benedict broke open the scoring in the second half.
Koch scored her seventh goal of the game in the 57
th minute when she took a throw in on the right side of the box, beat her defender and sent the ball to the left of the keeper.
Cecilia Lovinger scored the second goal of her CSB career in the 78
th minute off a long shot into the upper right corner of the net, and
Sydney Bramer ended the scoring in the 82
nd minute when she scored off a corner kick by
Olivia Musser. That goal marked the first of the season for Bramer and the second of her career.
When all was said and done, CSB had 12 shots to Concordia's 10, and Saint Benedict had 10 shots on net to the Cobbers' four.
Heather Kaluzniak made three saves in 62 minutes, and first year
Kendall Koenen played the final 28 minutes in net.
Saturday's game marked the second-to-last home game of the year for CSB, which has just three more games left in the regular season. Saint Benedict is at Hamline next Saturday, Oct. 22, and ends its home season Wednesday, Oct. 26, against Macalester. CSB wraps up the regular season Oct. 29 at St. Olaf.
