Blazer volleyball to play two matches at Northwestern tourney

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team is scheduled to compete in four regular-season tournaments this season, and the Blazers are at the first of those four tournaments this Saturday. CSB travels to Roseville, Minn., for matches against Coe College and Loras College Saturday afternoon as part of the Northwestern Tournament.

CSB (0-1) vs Loras College (2-1), 3 p.m.
 
About the Kohawks
Coe College, which is 2-1 so far this season, came in at No. 25 in the AVCA Preseason Poll. Coe lost 3-1 to No. 20 Augsburg and beat Northwestern, which is receiving votes in the poll, by the same score Friday in the first night of the tournament. Brianna Smith had 14 kills and Olivia Leisinger added 13 against Northwestern. Mackenzie Harbaugh had 45 assists and Madi Miller had 22 digs.
 
About the Duhawks
Loras is also 2-1 heading into Saturday with wins against Grinnell and St. Scholastica and a 3-0 loss to Dominican Friday night at the tournament. Danni Kennedy leads the team with 27 kills so far this season and Jenna LaCorte has 66 assists. Haley Bergan has a team-high 66 digs.
 
Getting Playing Time
Saturday's games mark the second and third of the season for the young Blazers, who are looking for their first win of the year after falling 3-0 to Northwestern Tuesday in the season opener. CSB, which is receiving votes in Division III, has nine new faces on its roster this season, and head coach Nicole Hess is looking for those newcomers to get more comfortable on the floor. First year Lauren Mathews had four kills against Northwestern, and sophomore transfer Megan Pekarek had 24 assists and 12 digs.
 
Who to Watch
Senior outside hitter Laura Schmitt finished with nine kills against the Eagles Tuesday night to kick off her senior campaign, and she also had a team-high 17 digs. Junior Meghan Koop finished second with five kills and she also added nine digs. Four new faces got playing time Tuesday, including Mathews, Pekarek, Emily Goerdt and Liz Schultz.
