WAVERLY, Iowa – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team pushed its winning streak to six matches and wrapped up its time in Iowa with a pair of 3-1 wins Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers, who avenged a loss from earlier this year when they beat Coe 3-1 Friday night, defeated Buena Vista and host-school Wartburg by the same score Saturday afternoon. Both Coe and Wartburg are receiving votes in the latest AVCA Division III poll.
CSB started the day with its win over Buena Vista. The Blazers won the first two sets 25-15 and 25-18, and looked poised for the sweep in set three, but the Beavers were able to pull away for a 27-25 win. It didn't matter, however, as CSB came back to win the fourth set 25-20.
Laura Schmitt finished with a match-high 20 kills, which matches her season high from the Sept. 16 St. Thomas game.
Meghan Koop finished with 13 kills and
Lauren Mathews added nine. Koop paced the CSB defense with a career-high 27 digs, and
Gabi Narvaez and
Megan Barta each chipped in with 20. Schmitt also had 17 digs and
Megan Pekarek had 48 assists and 18 digs.
Saint Benedict wrapped up the tournament with a win over the host school. After a convincing 25-15 win by the Blazers in the first set, Wartburg came back and took the second set 25-20. But CSB won the third and fourth sets 25-19 to hold on for the win.
Schmitt finished with 18 kills and 14 digs and
Lauren Mathews also added 10 kills and three total blocks. Pekarek had 39 assists and
Megan Barta led the defense with 21 digs.
Meghan Koop also had 15 digs and
Gabi Narvaez finished with nine.
Schmitt and Pekarek were both named to the all-tournament team for their play over the weekend. They were joined by Wartburg right-side hitter Krystal Graves, Buena Vista outside hitter Maddie Bardole and UW-Platteville middle hitter Lidia Frias.
The Blazers are on the road one more time before playing on their home court again. CSB returns to MIAC play Wednesday, Sept. 23, when it travels to St. Paul, Minn., to take on Macalester College at 7:30 p.m.
