NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team used a 3-0 sweep of St. Olaf College to push its winning streak to double digits Saturday afternoon. The Blazers beat the Oles 25-22, 28-26 and 25-9 to pick up its 10
th straight win in Northfield, Minn.
The 10-match winning streak marks CSB's longest winning streak since the 2013 season. After going 2-4 to start the season, CSB hasn't lost since falling 3-2 to No. 3 Christopher Newport and No. 12 Eastern on Sept. 11 in Boston, Mass.
CSB, which is undefeated in the MIAC at 5-0 and is 11-5 overall, started the match with a 25-22 win. The Oles kept the second match close but the Blazers held on for a 28-26 win, and CSB wrapped up the sweep with a 25-9 victory in set three.
St. Olaf led late in the second set, and led by as many as seven at 21-14. By
Mary Franz and Briana Schmeising each had a kill, and a kill from
Lauren Mathews and an Ole block error tied the score at 22. Mathrews finished with a pair of kills in the final five points and
Laura Schmitt also added a kill to help CSB hold on for the win.
Mathews finished with a career-high 17 kills to lead CSB, which had 42 total kills. Schmiesing added 10 kills and Schmitt finished with seven kills and 11 digs.
Megan Pekarek had 39 assists and
Megan Barta led the defense with 21 digs.
Meghan Koop also had 10 digs.
Kathryn Johnson led the Oles (8-12, 0-5) with eight kills. Kersten Bork had 16 assists and Abby Slack finished with 14 digs.
CSB returns home Wednesday, Oct. 7, when it takes on Carleton College at 7 p.m.
