CSB volleyball’s win streak ends with loss to Carleton

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Last season, the Carleton Knights came to Claire Lynch and handed the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team its first MIAC loss of the season.

Wednesday night, Carleton did it again.

The Blazers entered Wednesday's MIAC match on a 10-match winning streak and with a 5-0 conference record, but the Knights came away with a 3-1 win. The loss is the first since Sept. 11 for Saint Benedict, and marks its first MIAC loss of the year. The Knights won 25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 25-17.

CSB is now 12-5 overall and tied for second in the MIAC with a 5-1 records. Saint Mary's is also 5-1, and Gustavus leads the league with a 5-0 mark. The Knights are now 11-6 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Carleton came out strong in the first set and snagged a 6-2 lead. The Blazers fought back, and kept the game close throughout. CSB took a 19-16 lead on a pair of Carleton attack errors, but the Knights rattled off nine straight points to pull away for the win.

The second set was just as close, with the game tied all the way to 18-18. A Lauren Mathews kill gave CSB a slim lead, and the Blazers went up 20-18 on a Carleton attack error. Laura Schmitt had a kill and Briana Schmiesing added back-to-back kills to make it 23-19 in CSB's favor, and kills from Schmiesing and Mary Franz helped push CSB to victory.

The Knights were able to make early runs in both the third and fourth sets, and the Blazers were never able to come back like they did in the first two sets, giving Carleton the win.

Schmitt and Schmiesing each finished with 13 kills for CSB, which had 49 kills. Megan Pekarek finished with 45 assists, and Schmitt also led the defense with 31 digs. Megan Barta added 20 digs and Meghan Koop had 13 digs and nine kills.
