Soccer Travels to Moorhead

10/17/2015

After dropping a 1-0 stunner to Gustavus on Wednesday, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team heads to Moorhead tomorrow (Oct. 17th) to take on the Concordia Cobbers.

The Schedule:

Saint Benedict @ Concordia, 1 p.m., Saturday, October 17th, Moorhead, Minn.

The Records:

CC: 7-6 (3-4 MIAC)

CSB: 6-5-2 (4-3 MIAC)

Who to Watch:

CSB:

Sr. F Gracie Vaughan | Has scored in three straight games against the Cobbers

Sr. F Aly Hoffman | Fifth in the conference with six goals scored

Sr. M Megan Lenz | Former defender is proving she is elite at both positions with accurate passing and vetern positioning

CC:

Sr. K Elizabeth Bitzan | Second in the MIAC with 63 saves this year

Jr. F Emily Wendorff | Leads the Cobbers in all major statistical categories with six goals, three assists and fifteen points

Sr. D Sadie Hayes | Scored goals in three of the past four games

About the Cobbers:

After finishing second overall last season the Cobbers have dropped to eighth in the MIAC thus far this season. They are led by senior keeper Elizabeth Bitzan, who had 18 shutouts her sophomore and junior years. Their downfall has been their defense, which is second-worst in the MIAC and has given up almost two goals per game this season.

Storyline:

Both teams need a win today in order to stay in contention for the conference playoffs. Saint Benedict has lost three games, but its three losses have come to the top three teams in the conference. Despite the fact that they've had a tough schedule early in the season, Saint Benedict has the most goals scored in conference games this season. A breakout performance against Concordia could give the Blazers the momentum they need to swing back up to the top of the conference.

Last Time Out:

On Wednesday, the Blazers hosted the second-place Gustavus Gusties. After 84 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Gusties' Hannah Sturtz lobbed a shot past Blazer keeper Heather Kaluzniak and the Gusties went on it win the game. The Blazers controlled possession for a large part of the game, but were unable to capitalize on a penalty kick and a couple missed breakaway opportunities.
