Owatonna, Minn. – The Saint Benedict tennis team lost a long battle with St. Olaf on Saturday (Apr. 5), falling 5-4 after four sets went to a tiebreaker.

Tied 4-4 and heading into the last match of the day at No. 6 singles, the Blazers' (9-8, 2-3 MIAC) Beth Richmond (Eau Claire, Wis.) was all even with the Oles' (3-2, 2-2 MIAC) Mary Eide. Eide took the first set 6-4, while Richmond evened the score at 6-4 after the second.

Then in the third, the match went all the way to 10-7 before Eide earned the decision and gave the Oles the win. It was just the third loss all season for Richmond.

Matches at No. 4 and five singles also went a full three sets, as the Oles surged ahead late for the win.

At No. 2 singles, Laura Finn (Delano, Minn.) came from behind for a three-set victory winning 6-1 and 10-7 in the second and third sets respectively, after dropping the first 6-3. After playing most of the season at No. 3 singles, Finn has now evened her season record at No. 2 at 3-3 on the year.

Jamie Hoffman (Bemidji, Minn.) put the Blazers ahead 4-2 after her straight set win at No. 3 singles, winning 6-3, 6-0 to improve to 2-0 in the third spot this season. In each of her last three wins, Hoffman has won at least one set 6-0.

The Blazers also had a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with Hoffman and Finn winning 8-4 at No. 1, and Daley Rupar (Merrill Wis.) and Ellie Black (Litchfield, Minn.) winning at No. 2, also by an 8-4 final.
