Huge Win For Tennis

Blazer tennis scored a huge 5-4 win over defending MIAC Champion St. Catherine.

St. Joseph, Minn. – The Saint Benedict tennis team won its third straight on Saturday (Apr. 26), scoring a huge 5-4 decision over St. Catherine.
 
The Wildcats entered the match with just one loss in conference play, and as the defending MIAC champions.
 
The Blazers started the day with a 2-1 lead after doubles, and then split singles play with wins from Laura Finn (Delano, Minn.), Victoria Beach (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Erin Stocker (St. Cloud, Minn.) to seal up the victory.
 
At No. 4 singles Beach had the most impressive match of the day, winning a decisive third set 12-10, rallying back from the verge of defeat, after being down 9-4. She started the match with a 6-4 win, before falling 6-3 in the second to force a third. Beach's win was the Blazers fourth as a team, and her rally kept them alive for the match victory.
 
Finn had the most dominant win of the day, scoring a 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles decision for her 15th of the year. She also teamed up with Jamie Hoffman (Bemidji, Minn.) for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, taking down the Wildcats top duo.
 
At No. 6 singles, Stocker won a tie break on the second set for her 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win, notching her seventh victory of the year.
 
At the top spot, Daley Rupar (Merrill, Wis.) was matched up with the No. 9 player in the region and gave her a run in the first set falling 7-6. After the long battle in set one, the Wildcats Victoria Bravo took a 6-1 win in set two.
 
Now at 12-9 on the season and 5-4 in the MIAC, the Blazers are secured a MIAC Tournament berth regardless of what happens in their match with Concordia tomorrow. The tournament begins with quarterfinal action on Tuesday, Apr. 29 with the high seed hosting.
