Fargo, N.D. – The Saint Benedict tennis team started 2014 in fine fashion, scoring an impressive 7-2 win over MSU Moorhead in their first action since the fall season.
The Blazers opened with a sweep through doubles play, winning 8-1 and No. 1 and No. 3, and getting an 8-2 win at No. 2.
At the top spot
Jamie Hoffman (Bemidji, Minn.) and
Laura Finn (Delano, Minn.) scored an 8-1 victory, getting the Blazers off to a strong start and setting the tone for the day.
"Laura and Jamie picked up where they left off this past fall with an impressive first win, controlling play, attacking the net, and putting away volleys," head coach
Scott Larsen said.
Already up 3-0, the Blazer sealed the win with a 4-2 run through singles play. The only two match-ups the Blazers lost went to three sets, while all four wins were 2-0 sweeps.
At No. 2 singles, Hoffman made quick work, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Beth Richmond (Eau Claire, Wis.) at No. 6, however, had the most dominating win of the day, taking the first set 6-1, before closing the day with a 6-0 shutout.
Finn won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and
Ellie Black (Litchfield, Minn.) added a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 5.
The Blazers scored their second straight win over Division II MSU Moorhead, also beating them in the second match of the season last year.
They will now jump right into MIAC play heading to St. Thomas for a 3:30 p.m. match on Feb. 9.
