St. Joseph, Minn. – The Saint Benedict soccer team ran the drama high this afternoon (Sept. 17), scoring a double overtime win over Hamline in the conference opener.

Just 45 seconds into the second extra session, Aly Hoffman (Chaska, Minn.) took control of a loose ball sitting idle in front of the keeper – who was laying down after a save – and dribbled around the keeper and planted the ball in the back of the net.

The goal was the fourth of the season for the Blazer sophomore, and her second game winner, keeping the Blazers unbeaten for another day. Saint Benedict had just moved up to No. 24 in the national polls earlier in the day, and now extend their winning streak to five games, the longest since the 2010 season.

The Blazers never trailed in the match, and have yet to trail all season, holding leads today of 1-0 and 2-1 before winning the game.

The Blazers got on the board early after their first corner kick of the game just past the 10-minute mark. On a short corner, Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) sent a short pass to Megan Lenz (Lino Lakes, Minn.) who then served the ball into the box where the rest of the Blazers were waiting.

With the ball bouncing between players, Bouchard returned to the group and got a hold of it, sending a pass from the center of the box to Kaitlyn Lauer (Plymouth, Minn.) who was off to the left. Lauer then went back across the goal to the far post to put the Blazers ahead.

The half ended with the Blazers holding their 1-0 lead, but it didn't last long into the second.

In the first minute of the second half the Pipers were on the attack, and had a good scoring chance deep in the Blazers' end. The Pipers' Mallory Wirth was able to get just enough on her shot to get the ball past Blazer goalkeeper Heather Kaluzniak (Plymouth, Minn.), and tie the match.

The goal ended a streak of 277 minutes of scoreless play for the CSB first-year, a stretch that crossed over two full games.

Less than 10 minutes later, however, Grace Vaughan made it three straight games with a goal, scoring in the 53rd minute to put the Blazers back in the lead at 2-1. Colleen Bouchard notched the assist, her second of the match and sixth of the season.

Thirty more minutes would pass before the Pipers again evened the score, this time doing so on a set piece. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Mayla Hirshkowitz lined up a free kick outside the 18, and got a friendly deflection off the Blazer wall, before sneaking inside the post for the equalizer.

The Blazers held the Pipers without a shot in overtime while taking four as they locked up the win. All told the Blazers outshot the Pipers 21-to-12 in the match, and doubled their shots on goal at a 12-to-6 clip. Kaluzniak stopped four shots, picking up her fourth win of the season.
