Hilton Head Island – The Saint Benedict tennis team earned a split on Mar. 25, capping the day with a 7-2 win over Carroll, coming back from 7-2 loss to Colby to open the day.
The win over Carroll gave the Blazers (6-3) a victory over the 2012 Midwest Conference Champions, while Colby stayed unbeaten on the spring campaign with its win over the Blazers.
In the victory over Carroll the Blazers got a sweep of double's action, with
Daley Rupar then clinching the team win in singles play. Rupar scored a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, coming back from a tough three set loss against Colby to earn her fourth win in the last five matches.
The Blazers took four of six singles matches against the Pioneers in the win, including the second career shutout from
Ellie Black, who won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, moving up from her usual spot at No. 5.
Also winning for the Blazers was
Aly Dahlquist at No. 6 who bounced back from her first loss of the season earlier in the day, as well as
Beth Richmond at No. 5, who earned her team-leading seventh win of the year.
In the loss to Colby, the Blazers saw a three-match winning streak snapped, suffering one three-set loss in the process, and three additional sets that went the wrong way on a tiebreak.
Earning a win in three sets though, was
Jamie Hoffman at No. 1 singles, coming back from 6-4 loss in the first set to win 6-3 in the second and take the win with a 10-8 victory in the third.
Rupar lost in three, while
Victoria Beach and Black suffered losses that included 7-6 (10-8) and 7-6 (7-5) sets respectively.
Taking the win over Carroll as momentum, the Blazers return to action on Mar. 26, taking on Concordia (Wis.), before closing the trip on Mar. 27 with a match against Scranton (Pa.).
