Thinking Spring: After being stuck inside for the first half of the season, the Saint Benedict tennis team finally gets to get outside this week, as they open up spring break play on Mar. 23. The Blazers will be playing five matches over the week-long break on Hilton Head Island (S.C.). Sitting at 4-2 on the season, the Blazers open with Converse (S.C.) on Mar. 23 before playing twice on Mar. 25, taking on Colby (Maine) and Carroll (Wis.). On Mar. 26they'll take on Concordia (Wis.), and will close the trip on Mar. 27 playing Scranton (Pa.).
About Converse: The Blazers and Valkyries play at 11:30 a.m. on Mar. 23. A Division II school, the Valkyrie finally got their first win of the season on Mar. 9 with a 6-3 win over King College. Overall they are 1-10 on the year, with six of their losses by shutout. In only two matches on the season have they won more than two matches individually. Olivia Self has spent all season at No. 1 singles, and sits 3-7. Three players have combined to play No. 2 singles, resulting in an 0-10 record from the trio.
About Colby: The Blazers and Mules play at 11:30 a.m. on Mar. 25.With just two matches under their belt this spring, the Mules sit at 1-1 heading into the trip. They opened the spring season with a 5-4 loss to Wheaton, but most recently won 8-1 over Merrimack on Mar. 10. In the win over Merrimack, the Mules won all three doubles sets, with the only loss coming at No. 1 singles.
About Carroll: The Blazers and Pioneers play at 6:30 p.m. on Mar. 25. Playing the bulk of their season in the fall, the Pioneers capped the first half of their season in the semifinals of the Midwest Conference Tournament. They went 11-3 in match play last fall, which included four wins by 9-0 scores. After going 4-0 in their conference in the regular season, they were upset in their first tournament match. Since closing the fall season on Oct. 12, the Pioneer have not played, finally breaking the racquets back out for competition this week.
About Concordia (Wis.): The Blazers and Falcons play at 11:30 a.m. on Mar. 26. The Falcons have played just once this spring, falling 9-0 to St. Scholastica back on Mar. 1. In the fall season, though, they went 9-3, which included a 9-2 mark in the Northern Athletics Conference. They had success at the top of the line-up last fall, as Julie Spransy went 7-3 at No. 1 sinlges and Jaclyn Ward went 8-2 at No. 2. Of their nine wins, eight came by either 9-0 or 8-1 scores.
About Scranton: The Blazers and Royals play at 8:30 a.m. on Mar. 27. The Royals have had a tough go lately as their first match of the spring was postponed, and they have not gotten to compete since last fall. In two matches in the fall, the Royals split, earning a 6-3 win over Marywood, before a narrow 5-4 loss to DII Kutztown.
Last Time Out: The Blazer tennis team made it two straight on Mar. 16, with their 7-2 win over Concordia. The Blazers controlled the match with the winless Cobbers (0-9, 0-3 MIAC) from the start, taking a 2-1 lead after doubles and then cruising through the top three players to lock up the win. The victory also gets the Blazers to an even 2-2 in MIAC action, while moving their season record to 4-2 as they get their second consecutive win.
Up Next: When the Blazers return to St. Joseph, they will have about another week off before jumping back into MIC play. They'll get back to it on Apr. 6 as they head to Hamline for a 12 p.m. match. They play their first home match outdoors on Apr. 13 when they host St. Thomas at 12 p.m.
