MIAC Semifinals: The No. 7 Saint Benedict volleyball team finished their regular season with a record of 24-2 and followed that up with some post-season success after beating Hamline earlier in the week with yet another sweep. It was the Blazers' 20th sweep of the season, as they have only lost 11 sets all season. At 25-2 on the year, they now hit the road to face No. 13 Augsburg tonight (Nov. 7) in Minneapolis at 7 p.m.
Â
About the Auggies: With the most wins in the MIAC this season, the Auggies are a tough opponent with a record of 28-3. The MIAC co-champions with a 10-1 conference record, they head into the match with a five-game winning streak with their only loss in the past 25 games coming to St. Thomas, who they tied for the regular season title. The streak has helped them climb the national rankings where they currently sit at No. 13, after opening the season unranked.
Â
Last Matchup: In their last matchup, the Auggies handed the Blazers their first loss of the season in a 3-0 sweep. The Blazers were held to a team hitting percentage of under .160 in two of their three sets and struggled offensively, with the exception of
Lexi Rinde and
Lexi Alm. Rinde finished the night with 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .609 while Alm added another 12 kills. The Blazers started the night with a tough 25-23 loss and followed that up with another close 25-22 loss in the second. The Auggies came out tough in the third set and took a 25-17 win over the Blazers to break their 11-game season opening winning streak.
Â
The Storyline: The Blazers are coming into this game with another 11-game winning streak and are hoping to capitalize on their huge momentum right now. The Auggies are also coming into this game with a five-game winning streak, and a win over the Blazers earlier in the season. The Auggies account for half of CSB's losses, and the Blazers will be coming out strong to get a win back and move on to the next stage in their post-season run.
Â
Who to Watch: Rinde has a strong hold on the Blazer offense this season and leads the team with 305 kills and a hitting percentage of .344.
Mary Franz has also had some offensive success with 156 kills and leads the team in blocks with 78 total blocks.
Taya Kockelman continues to lead the MIAC and NCAA in assists, a spot she's been in all year, with 11.87 assists per set.
