Win Streak Snapped as Volleyball Falls in Five at Concordia

Jones sets new career-high with 28 kills

MOORHEAD, Minn. - After winning its last five matches, the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team was handed its first loss since Oct. 3 as the Bennies fell in five sets at Concordia College Saturday night, Oct. 31. The loss drops CSB to 12-10 overall, 6-3 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action, while Concordia improves to 12-11 (5-4 MIAC).

A career day from senior Kali Jones (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) was not enough to power Saint Ben's past the Cobbers. Jones totaled a career-high 28 kills on an impressive .280 attack percentage. She committed just seven attack errors across 75 swings in the match and eclipsed 30 points in a match for the first time in her career, finishing with 30.5. Fellow senior Kate Stadum (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) followed with 13 kills, one shy of her career-best, while sophomore Karley Dunham (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) tied her career-high with 11, coming on an efficient .364 clip.

Junior Izzy Torve (Loretto, Minn./Orono) led the way with 27 assists, closely followed by sophomore Ginny Schuler (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) with 25, one helper short of her personal-best. Senior Ingrid Noha (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) tied her career-high of four aces, followed by three from Stadum.

Five Bennies finished with double-digit digs to pace the defense. Jones powered CSB with 16 digs, while Stadum closely trailed with 15. Sophomore Brooke Siegle (Norwood Young America, Minn./Waconia) rounded out the top three with 14. Torve and Schuler also finished with 10+ digs, as they added 13 and 10, respectively. Dunham led the Bennies with three blocks, followed by two apiece from Jones and Stadum.

As a team, Saint Ben's registered the advantage in kills (64-57), aces (9-7), assists (59-53), and digs (91-85), but Concordia's edge in attack percentage (.178-.175) and blocks (9-6) proved to be the difference maker in the tight contest.

After falling in the opening set 30-28, Saint Benedict responded in the second. The Bennies erased an early four-point deficit with an 11-1 run to take full control. Two straight Cobbers miscues kickstarted the run, while Stadum roped back-to-back aces to tie the score at seven. After an attack error gave CSB the slim lead, Concordia responded with a kill for the sideout. A service error gifted the Bennies the ball back, followed by a Jones kill. Noah sandwiched a CC attack error with aces, an attack error by the home team made it a 14-8 lead to close the run.

Concordia eventually fought back to make it a three-point contest, 22-19, forcing Saint Benedict to call timeout. After the break, Jones got the Bennies a key point with a kill to put the set in reach. The senior stayed hot, as she laced down another swing to push set point, and a service error solidified set two for the visitors, 25-21.

Saint Ben's snagged the third set despite not leading until the final three points. Down 14-10, the Bennies erased the four-point gap behind a pair of Jones kills followed by back-to-back Noha aces. Concordia responded with a string of points to go back ahead, 18-15. Once again, CSB came back, this time stealing four of the next five points. Schuler fed Jones for a kill, followed by a Jones ace. After a service error, Stadum downed a dish from Schuler and an attack error neutralized the score at 19.

The two teams traded points, leading to a 22-21 edge for Concordia. It would be the last point Saint Benedict would give up in the set, closing on a four-point run. Torve found the magic touch in the next three scores, connecting with Dunham for a kill followed by two straight to Jones to give the Bennies their first lead of the set, 23-22, and set point, 24-22. Elliott downed a ball sent over prematurely to complete the comeback, 25-22.

Concordia responded, taking set four, 25-18, to force a decisive fifth set. Saint Ben's went ahead early in the fifth, as kills from Dunham and Elliott, along with an attack error made it 3-1 in favor of the visitors. Saint Benedict would not be able to find its groove after that beginning run, ultimately falling, 15-10.

CSB remains on the road to take on league-leading Bethel University Wednesday night, Nov. 4. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at Robertson Center Gymnasium.
