With yet another sweep on their almost spotless record, the Saint Benedict volleyball team has reached 20 wins in the regular season for the second consecutive season. This sweep against St. Olaf this past Wednesday (Oct. 16) is their 17th of the season and has extended their winning streak to six straight wins. This is very important as they fight through the remainder of their season with only MIAC matchups. The Blazers, who are currently ranked No. 8 in the country, will face off against another MIAC rival today (Oct. 19) in Claire Lynch Hall at 3 p.m. against Gustavus.

About the Gusties: With a record of 9-15, the Gusties have just enough games left to finish the season at .500. In conference play, the Gusties have a record of 3-3 with three more MIAC matchups left in their season. There is no doubt that they will be coming to the Blazer's court looking to turn their momentum around to help them finish the season strong. The Gusties are currently on a two game losing streak and are coming off a tough loss to UW-La Crosse, where they were swept.

Volleyball Team Break v. St. Olaf, 9/29/12
Last Year: The Blazers last met the Gusties just one day shy of a year ago. In St. Peter, they finished with a 3-1 win over the Gusties in a very close match. The Blazers started the match off with a 25-16 win in the first set, but went on to lose the second set 25-16. In the third set, the Gusties fought hard and extended the game as they fell 29-27. In the fourth and final set, the Gusties once again fought hard but couldn't overcome the Blazers, who were on an 11-game winning streak when they came to their court.

The Storyline: The Blazers have a conference record of 5-2 right now and with the two powerhouses of St. Thomas and Augsburg sitting at the top of the conference, they will need to take full advantage of their four remaining conference games. Much to their advantage, they will be facing the Gusties at home for their third straight home game and will have one more home game this season against Concordia next week. If the Blazers can continue their winning streak through these MIAC matchups they will be in good shape as they head to the MIAC Tournament in just two weeks.

Who to Watch: With 1,212 kills in her career, Lexi Alm (Forest Lake, Minn.) is currently seventh in all-time kills in Blazer history and with 20 kills in the past two games, she is quickly approaching the sixth place spot of 1,233. She is also leading the MIAC with an average of 0.61 aces per set. Mary Franz (Broomfield, Colo.) has also racked up 15 kills in the past two games on top of her eight blocks in the same stretch. Franz has recently added a new offensive threat to the Blazer's middle on top of their defensive domination. Franz has also had a lot of help from Sophie Stangl (Buffalo, Minn.) in the middle who recorded 10 kills in her last game and seven more against Luther in the previous match.

Last Time Out: In their last time out, the Blazers grabbed another sweep in a win against St. Olaf and held them to under 16 points in all three sets. The Blazers strong defense also held the Oles to a team hitting percentage of under .100 in all three sets. Alm dominated this game offensively with 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .519 as Stangl added another 10 kills and finished with a hitting percentage of .600. Rachel led the team with 15 digs and contributed another seven kills to her team's defensive and offensive success. By the end of the night, the Blazers had finished with 25-15, 25-10 and 25-14 wins against the Oles to add to their heavy momentum going into their last matches of the season.
