St. Paul, Minn. – The Saint Benedict basketball team found a way to win tonight (Jan. 16) coming from behind for a 64-55 road win over Hamline.
The Blazers (10-4, 8-3 MIAC) trailed 29-27 at halftime, and were playing catch-up to the Pipers for much of the second half. After a disappointing first half, the Blazers put together a second where they shot 57% (12-of-21) from the floor and slowly chipped away at the Hamline lead.
The Pipers (5-9, 5-6 MIAC) weren't much better in the first half, shooting just 37% (11-of-30), but still managed to lead for the final 7:25 and led going into the locker room.
In the second, the Blazers were paced by the Lueck sisters, who each finished with a team high 13 points. Sophomore Emily scored eight of hers in the second, with them all coming consecutively, while first-year Mattie put in five in the half, including the go-ahead free throws a the 12:17 mark.
The pair has been able to score in bunches together before, with Emily scoring 16 and Mattie adding 14 way back in the season opening win over Colorado College.
Behind the two, the Blazers went on a 17-to-8 run midway through the second half, and took their first lead since late in the first. And when an
Emily Lueck three-pointer broke the third tied of the half, the Blazers would not trail again, outscoring the Pipers 37-26 in the period.
For the second straight game, the Blazers finished with four players in double figures, as
Brianna Barrett and
Whitney Canton also made their way to the leaderboard with 12 points each.
Nine different players scored in the win, with eight playing double-digit minutes as the Blazers scored their first road win of 2013, and won for the fifth time in the last six games.
With two wins in a row, they must now remain on the road as they look for a third, heading to St. Olaf for a 3 p.m. tilt on Saturday (Jan. 19). It will be the first meeting of the two teams this season, and the only team that the Blazers have yet to face. Last season, the Blazers split with the Oles, with each team winning at home.
