Northfield, Minn. - Whitney Canton had 18 points, five boards, and five assists as the Saint Benedict basketball team continued their win streak today (Jan. 19) with an impressive 72-56 drubbing of the St. Olaf Oles on the road. The win improves the Blazer's record to 11-4 (9-3 MIAC) and drops the Oles to 7-8 (5-7 MIAC).

The win also means the Blazers are able to keep pace with the Saint Mary's Cardinals in a fourth place tie among the MIAC standings. The Cardinals defeated Augsburg earlier today 59-53 in overtime in Minneapolis, to improve their conference record to 9-3. The Blazers remain just one game behind Concordia and Gustavus, who are tied for second in the MIAC.

The Blazers got off to a bit of a slow start, missing two out of their first 10 shots from the field. Despite the slow start, the Blazers were able to maintain a small lead over the Oles, grabbing a 16-10 lead off a jumper from Jamie Wollin halfway through the first half.

Then the Blazers caught fire.

In what was probably their most impressive three-point shooting display of the season, the Blazers shot 67% from beyond the arc in the first half, making 6-of-9. This lights-out shooting allowed them to go on an 11-to-2 run to finish the first half, and take a 35-21 halftime lead they would never relinquish.

After the second half began the Blazer defense didn't allow the Oles an inch of breathing room.

Two free throws by Ole foward Ashley Menzel cut the Blazer lead to 35-28 with 17 minutes to play, but that was the closest the Oles would come to the red-hot Blazers.

The Blazers took their largest lead of the game with four minutes left, stretching their lead to 67-44 on Jessica Fischer's three-pointer. Fischer was 2-of-2 from beyond the arc.

The Blazers shot 60% on 12-of-20 shooting from three-point land, which marks the most three-point field goals a CSB team has made since exactly two years ago, when the Blazers made 13-of-22 three-pointers en route to a 90-50 victory over St. Catherine's on January 19th, 2011.

Leading the way for the Blazers was wing Tish Alexander, who had 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from downtown.

On Monday (Jan. 21) the Blazers will round out their three game road trip and return to Northfield to take on the Knights of Carleton.
