St. Joseph, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (9-4 overall, 7-3 MIAC) showed up in full force today (Jan. 12) as they ended No. 3 St. Thomas' (11-2 overall, 9-1 MIAC) 11-game win streak with a  66-62 victory in Claire Lynch Hall, also giving the Tommies their first conference loss of the season.

Saint Benedict hit the court running, taking an early 5-0 lead in the first five minutes of play, but they were unable to hold on as the Tommies went on an 11-0 run. The lead continued to go back and forth for the remainder of the first half, but the Blazers came out on top leading 31-24 at the break.

St. Thomas answered back in the second half, slowly dwindling the seven point lead the Blazers had after one. Saint Benedict battled back but was unable to stop the Tommies from taking the lead. In another back and forth half, the Blazers were again able to come out on top, largely due to the efforts of seniors Whitney Canton, Morgan Dale, and Jamie Wollin.

With just four minutes left in regulation, Wollin hit a three pointer to give the Blazers a 60-57 lead. St. Thomas answered back with a layup by Jenna Dockter -- who led the Tommies in scoring with 14 -- and tied the game 60-60 on a free throw.

Dale again gave the Blazers the lead, sinking both of her shots at the line with just over two minutes remaining. Junior Brianna Barrett then extended the Blazer lead to four with a jumper in the paint with just over one minute left to play. The next trip down the floor, St. Thomas' Ann Smith fouled first-year Mattie Lueck who hit one of her two free throws to give the Blazers a five point lead with just under 30 seconds to go.

The Tommies fought back again, hitting a three-pointer with 13 seconds left in regulation, narrowing the Blazer lead to three. As Saint Benedict transitioned up the court, Canton was fouled by St. Thomas' Taylor Young. Canton missed her first shot, but sealed the Blazer victory by making her second shot from the line, giving Saint Benedict a four point lead.

Canton had a game high 14 points for Saint Benedict, going 6-of-8 at the line. Dale earned a career high 16 rebounds, just five short of the all-time record for the Blazers, and finsihed with her first career double-double adding 11 points. Wollin and Barrett each had 13 points in tonight's win, with Wollin going 3-of-5 behind the arc, while Barrett was 2-of-3 from long range.

The last time Saint Benedict beat the Tommies was on Jan. 22, 2011 with a 62-58 win at home. This was the Tommies first loss since their season opener against now second-ranked Calvin College.

Saint Benedict will get Monday off before traveling to St. Paul, Minn. on Jan. 16 to play conference opponent Hamline University. Only .500 in conference play, the Pipers can't be taken lightly as just today they beat Concordia 73-66.
