St. Paul, Minn. – The Saint Benedict soccer team opened conference play in a good way tonight (Sept. 11), working for a late 1-0 road victory over Macalester under the lights at Macalester Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the two teams saw nearly 35 minutes pass in the second with the scoreboard still yet to show a change. Finally, at the 79:33 mark, the Blazers'
Paige Olson found room for the game-winner, scoring her first of the season on her only shot of the game.
Saint Benedict (2-1-1, 1-0-0 MIAC) opens league action with a victory, and gets back in the win column for the first time since the season opener.
Macalester (3-2-0, 0-1-0 MIAC), meanwhile, falls for the first time in four matches, and is shutout for the first time all season. The Scots entered the game with nine goals over their last two matches.
Olson's goal makes her the fifth different player to find the net for the Blazers this season, as each goal on the season has come from a different scorer. Alyssa Hoffman and
Jess Pellegrene assisted on the goal, with the point moving Hoffman into the team scoring lead.
The Blazers were slightly outshot in the match, 8-to-7, but the eight they allowed were the second fewest they've given up all season. In the second half, CSB held a 4- to-3 edge in shots, while also holding the Scots without a corner.
Saint Benedict opened the second firing , earning their first shot less than three minutes in. A corner in the fourth minute of the half turned into another chance, but the ball missed high. Macalester was unable to put a ball on frame in the second as the Blazer defense helped put the game away and preserve their second shutout of the season.
The win is the first for the Blazers over the Scotd under
Steve Kimble, and first since the 2007 season when they also won 1-0. In 2007, the Blazers went 15-6 and placed second in the MIAC with a 9-2 league record.
As the Blazers continue towards the 2012 MIAC Championship, the will continue on the road as they travel to Carleton at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. They then return home a day later for just their second home game of the season. In a short break from conference action, they host Wartburg at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16.
