Northfield, Minn. – The Saint Benedict soccer team had to work extra for the win today (Sept. 15), finally scoring the game-winner late in the second overtime for the 1-0 road win over Carleton.
With less than three minutes remaining Alyssa Hoffman broke the scoreless tie, finishing off a rebound after a shot from
Colleen Bouchard. Hoffman made good on her second shot of the day, finishing as one of six players with multiple shots in the match.
Hoffman's second goal of the season, the Blazer rookie now moves into the team lead, with today's goal marking her first game-winner.
In a match-up of the 2011 MIAC co-champions, the Blazers set themselves apart early in 2012. Carleton also entered the weekend ranked fourth in the North Region, and the win will be a big plus for the Blazers as they look to return to both the regional and national rankings.
The Blazers capitalized on their fourth shot of the second overtime, after outshooting the Knights 18-to-10 in the match. Their 11 shots in regulation weren't enough, as Carleton keeper Mikayla Coulombe stopped all four she saw. Blazer goalkeeper
Megan Favorite had the second best match of her season with five saves while logging her third shutout of the season.
The Blazer attack also produced seven corner kicks in the match, while holding the Knights to just two.
The win moves the Blazers to 3-1-1 in the season and a perfect 2-0-0 in conference play, while Carleton drops to 4-3-0 dropping their third match in the last four.
Tomorrow, Saint Benedict returns home to host No. 22 Wartburg in another key regional match-up. Also the second ranked team in the region, the Blazers and Knights kick off at 1 p.m.
