St. Cloud, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team picked up its second win of the season with a 4-0 shutout over Augsburg College today (Nov. 17).
The Blazers (2-2-3, 1-2-1 MIAC) entered today's game after a 1-1 tie with the Auggies (1-6-1, 0-3-1 MIAC) last night despite outshooting Augsburg 41-to-30. Saint Benedict started its surge early in the first period, scoring less than three minutes into the game. The goal came from sophomore
Megan Brettingen, her fourth of the season, with the assist going to sophomore
Alli O'Brien.
Saint Benedict's offense hit the ice in full force during the second period, scoring three goals and outshooting Augsburg 18-to-5. The Blazers' first goal of the period came just under six minutes in, on a shot by O'Brien. She was assisted by junior Allyson Nielsen. The goal was O'Brien's second of the series.
With seven minutes left to play in the second, Saint Benedict took a three-goal lead on a goal by Nielson, her first of the season and second point of the game. She was assisted by O'Brien. Sophomore goaltender
Jenna Traut came up big for the Blazer defense, stopping a barrage of shots during the second, including a breakaway from the slot.
The Blazers topped off their scoring with just over a minute left in the second on a goal by first-year
Siri Berg-Moberg. The goal was the first of her career and was assisted by sophomore
Tara Frey.
Saint Benedict controlled the game offensively, outshooting the Auggies 37-to-23. For the second night in a row, Augsburg controlled the faceoff circles, winning 39 of the 66 matchups.
Earning the win in net for Saint Benedict was Traut. She stopped all 23 shots the Auggies put on net and picked up her first career collegiate shutout.
Saint Benedict returns to action at 7 p.m. on Nov. 30 when they head to St. Paul, Minn. to play St. Catherine University.
