Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Saint Benedict Basketball team won their second game in as many days today, beating the Nebraska-Wesleyan Prairie Wolves by a score of 71-64. The win makes the Blazers the champions of the Colorado College Tip-off Tournament, and gives them some feel-good momentum as they fly back home to finish out the rest of their nonconference schedule.
The two teams played each other evenly early in the first half, until the Blazers took control of the game with 15 minutes left to play in the half. Senior wing
Whitney Canton ignited her team with a timely jump shot, and junior wing
Tish Alexander capped off the 14-0 run with two free throws to take a 21-10 lead.
The Blazers maintained that lead for most of the half, until the Prairie Wolves closed out the half with a nice run of their own, outscoring the Blazers 7-0 in the final minute of the half.
The Prairie Wolves came out strong again in the second half, bringing their deficit to 34-33 on Everett Payton's jump shot just two minutes into the second half.
With nine minutes left to play, the Prairie Wolves again pulled their scoring deficit to within one when senior forward Mallory Shannon beat the Blazer defense for a layup, bringing the score to 44-43.
Determined not to let the win slip out of their fingers, the Blazers responded urgently to the surge by the Prairie Wolves. Sophomore wing
Emily Lueck scored seven of the team's next 11 points, capping off an 11-2 Blazer run with two free throws and bringing the score to 55-45 with seven minutes left to play.
The Blazers controlled the game from there on out, never allowing the Prairie Wolves to crawl back within closer than seven points.
Lueck led all Blazer scorers with 16 points, giving her a total of 30 for the tournament. Canton finished second with 13, and had a great day on the defensive side of the ball, recording an impressive six of the team's 14 steals.
The Blazers now return home and turn their attention to the rest of their conference schedule. They will have a week off for Thanksgiving break and will return to action at 7 p.m. on November 26 at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
