St. Cloud, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team began their 2012-13 campaign with a 3-1 win over the Marian University Sabres this afternoon (Oct. 27) at the Dave Torrey Arena.
Head coach Jennifer Kranz picked up her second season opening win in her two years at Saint Benedict. Both wins have come against Marian, with the Blazers defeating the Sabres 4-2 in Fond du Lac, Wisc. last season.
Neither team was able to score in the first period, with Marian taking three penalties to the Blazers one. Saint Benedict outshot the Sabres 6-4, four of them coming during the first power play.

With momentum on their side the Blazers returned to the ice for period three. Just under five minutes into the period sophomore forward
Megan Brettingen extended the Blazers lead to two with a short-handed goal from the top of the slot that snuck past the Marian goaltender. Saint Benedict's penalty came at the 3:07 mark for too many skaters on the ice. Marian brought the game within one on an unassisted wrap around goal by Amanda Waigan at the 4:15 mark, preventing
Kaitlyn Rolando from earning her second career shutout.
Brettingen answered back, though, with an unassisted goal two minutes later the put the Blazers up 3-1, setting a personal career high for goals per game. In a near coast-to-coast effort, she shook off multiple defenders before faking left and beating the goalie to the right side.
The Blazers outshot the Sabres 27-to-10, with 11 of those coming from the slot. Rolando picked up the win for the Blazers with nine saves in her 12th career start. Brettingen led Saint Benedict in the faceoff circle with 10 of the Blazers 27 faceoff wins.
Saint Benedict returns to action at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 2, when they host Concordia at Dave Torrey Arena in St. Cloud, Minn.
