St. Cloud, Minn. – The Saint Benedict hockey team tied nationally ranked No. 10 Concordia 3-3 tonight (Nov. 2) on PAC the MAC! night at Dave Torrey Arena.
The Blazers (1-0-1) came into tonight's match off a season opening win against Marian University. Concordia got on the board first, just under nine minutes into the first period on a power play goal by Abby Taffe. Saint Benedict was unable to answer back despite having two power play opportunities, and left the ice after the first being outshot 5-to-2 by the Cobbers.
The Blazers hit the ice running out of the intermission, as the Saint Benedict offense came alive to start the second. Junior forward
Christine Brodersen tied the game at 1-1 with an even strength goal at 3:52. Saint Benedict maintained its momentum and took a 2-1 lead less than five minutes later on a
Megan Brettingen goal, assisted by
Megan Lawry. The goal was Brettingen's third of the season.
Two minutes after Brettingen's goal the Cobbers tied the game two apiece on a solo effort by Macy Leland. Just under 11 minutes into the period Concordia, was assessed a tripping penalty, allowing the Blazer offense to gain crucial momentum. Saint Benedict was unable to score on the power play, but continued their momentum and picked up the go ahead goal on a shot by
Alex Carlson from the right side of the faceoff circle.
The Blazer defense was put to work with five minutes left in the period as Concordia went on a five on three power play. Junior goaltender
Kaitlyn Rolando came up big for the Blazers, stopping all five shots during the Cobber advantage. Concordia continued their high pressured attack, scoring a power play goal just seconds after
Francie Varner returned to the ice ending the five on three edge.
With the score tied at 3-3 the teams headed to their respective locker rooms. Neither team was able to score during the final period of play, forcing the overtime session, which also went scoreless.
Brodersen and Carlson each went +2 on the night along with forward
Ashley Olson. Rolando recorded the tie in net for the Blazers, stopping 23-of-26 shots she saw, including 13 in the frantic second period.
The Blazers return to action at 2:30 p.m,Nov. 2, in Blaine, Minn. as they take on St. Olaf in nonconference action.
