The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (4-4 overall, 3-1 conference) outshot conference opponent Augsburg College and went on to win 2-0.
The Blazers came roaring out of the gates to start the first half. Just four minutes into the game senior forward Heather Beshears (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove)beat a defender to the right corner of the field. Seeing junior forward Jess Pellegrene (Maple Grove, MN, Totino-Grace)running towards the goal, Beshears placed the ball perfectly to Pellegrene who headed the ball in for an early 1-0 lead. Saint Ben's racked up six shots in the first half, compared to only one from Augsburg.
Defense was the strong point for the Blazers in the second half as they allowed zero shots on goal. Augsburg controlled the ball in the Blazer's zone frequently, so with Augsburg's pressure rising, the Blazers wanted to make another strong push to cushion their lead. Around 21 minutes into the second half, sophomore forward Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, IA, Xavier)led Heather Beshears perfectly. Beshears corralled the ball and beat her defender, lacing one past the Augsburg goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead.
CSB has now won three consecutive games, all of them conference games. Jess Pellegrene scored her second goal of the season, and Heather Beshears also added her second. Megan Favorite (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove)added one save because of the superb defense, giving the Blazers their third consecutive shutout win.
The Blazers return to action on Saturday, October 1 at 1 pm. They travel to Northfield, MN to take on conference opponent Saint Olaf.
