The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (4-4-1 overall, 3-1-1 MIAC) tied MIAC leader St. Olaf 2-2 Saturday after a hard fought battle.
The Blazers and the Oles were ranked second and first respectively in the MIAC coming into Saturday's matchup. The Oles had not lost a game all season, and CSB was looking forward to changing that. Just two and half minutes in,
Heather Beshears (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove)assisted
Olivia Wee (Savage, MN, Juan Diego) who laced one from way outside the box into the top right corner of the goal. This gave the Blazers an early 1-0 lead.
Just before the half with the Oles pushing the ball well, CSB wanted an insurance goal. Shortly before half they got it from
Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, IA, Xavier). She beat the Oles' goalie for the Blazers, scoring this time in the top left corner of the net giving the Blazers a 2-0 lead at halftime.
CSB was riding this momentum into the second half, but when facing a team as good as the Oles, you cannot let up one bit. Just 38 seconds into the second half, Oles Catie Christoffel scored her fifth goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game.
This sparked fire in the Oles. Seeing that it was not impossible to score they pushed the ball hard, but the Blazer defense refused to let in.
Megan Favorite (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) made four saves, but during the 73 minute, the Oles snuck one past Favorite to tie the game 2-2. In overtime, both teams played very well, and rarely allowed shots on goal. No team scored in either overtime so the contest was declared a tie. Oliva Wee scored her first goal of the season, while
Colleen Bouchard added her second.
The Blazers travel to play Nebraska Wesleyan College tomorrow at 1 pm.
