The College of Saint Benedict Blazer volleyball team (9-6 overall, 2-1 MIAC) fell to conference opponent St. Thomas University (#12) 1-3 tonight in Claire Lynch Hall.
Both teams came out hard in the first set to a deafening Blazer fan section. The Tommies took the first set (29-31) in a hard fought battle to earn an early 0-1 lead over the Blazers. The Blazers produced 18 kills in the first set, just one short of the Tommies. St. Thomas hit the court running and defeated the Blazers 14-25 to take a 0-2 lead. Saint Benedict fought back to force a fourth set by defeating the Tommies 25-17 to take the third set of the match. The Blazers compiled 13 kills and held St. Thomas to a .000 kill percentage. CSB fought to stay alive in the fourth set but eventually fell 19-25 as a tough Tommie team took the fourth set and the match.
Senior outside hitter
Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forest Lake) earned a double-double in the match. Sobieck notched 16 kills to earn a .268 kill percentage and compiled 12 digs. First-year outside hitter
Alexa Rinde (Minnetonka, MN, Orono) produced 16 kills as sophomore libero
Chelsea Rachel (Maple Lake, MN, Maple Lake) earned 16 digs. Leading the Blazers in set assists was first-year setter
Taya Kockelman (Minneota, MN, Minneota). Kockelman compiled 30 set assists as well as 10 digs for Saint Benedict.
Saint Benedict returns to action on Wednesday, September 28th, as the host MIAC opponent Macalester in Claire Lynch Hall at 7 pm.
