The College of Saint Benedict Blazer volleyball team (7-5 overall, 1-0 MIAC) ended day one of the Blazer Invitational undefeated. They beat St. Scholastica 3-1 and Simpson College 3-0.
Saint Benedict opened the invitational against St. Scholastica. The Blazers took a 1-0 lead with a hard fought 28-26 win over the Saints. CSB continued to play strong and took the second set 25-22. They compiled 16 kills and had a .400 kill percentage. St. Scholastica fought back to force a fourth set by defeating the Blazers 17-25. Saint Benedict persevered and took the match with a 25-21 fourth set win over the Saints. The Blazers notched 21 kills and had a .442 kill percentage.
Senior outside hitter
Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forest Lake) had a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore libero
Chelsea Rachel (Maple Lake, MN, Maple Lake) compiled 28 digs for the Blazers. First-year outside hitter
Alexa Rinde (Minnetonka, MN, Orono) notched 15 kills and earned a .355 kill percentage, while sophomore outside hitter
Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake) produced 14 kills and a .250 kill percentage.
Saint Benedict quickly returned to action against Simpson College. The Blazers won a tough fought first set (25-23) to take a 1-0 lead in the match. CSB kept their momentum to take the second set 25-17 and give themselves a 2-0 lead in the match. Saint Benedict compiled 17 kills and produced a .368 kill percentage in the third set to defeat Simpson 25-22 in the final set to take the match.
Sobieck earned her second double-double of the night with 10 kills and 10 digs. First-year setter
Taya Kockelman (Minneota, MN, Minneota) notched 15 digs while first-year middle blocker
Callie Neumann (Winsted, MN, Holy Trinity) compiled a .500 kill percentage. Rachel obtained 14 digs in the match.
Saint Benedict returns to action on Saturday, September 17th, at 1 pm against the University of Minnesota-Morris in St. Joseph, MN.
