The College of Saint Benedict Blazer tennis team's(13-7 overall, 7-3 MIAC) season came to an end in the MIAC semi-finals Saturday, May 7th, in St. Peter. MN.
The Blazers advanced to the semi-finals by defeating St. Thomas University 7-2. The Blazers took an early 2-1 lead after taking both first and third doubles. Junior
Sarah Rossman (Rochester, MN, Lourdes) and
Lauren Jones (Ogden, UT, Saint Joseph Catholic) defeated Mary Allen and Alexandra Frank 8-4 at first doubles and junior
Megan Seipel (New London, MN, New London-Spicer) and first-year
Jamie Hoffman (Bemidji, MN, Bemidji) defeated Anna Wright and Brianna Odegaard 8-3 at third doubles. The Blazers were nearly perfect at singles and won five of the six matches. Senior
Kylie Huether (Sioux Falls, SD , Washington) defeated Frank 6-2, 6-3 at first singles while Junior
Alyson Brandell (Elk River, MN, Elk River) defeated Madeline Gail 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Earning another point for the Blazers was Jones at third singles. Jones defeated Allen 6-3, 6-0. Rossman continued her strong singles play at fourth doubles and picked up another point for the Blazers. Saint Benedict's last point came at sixth doubles by Seipel. She defeated Wright 6-3, 6-1.
Saint Benedict faced Gustavus Adolphus College in the afternoon to battle for a spot in the MIAC championship. Gustavus hit the courts running and took an early 3-0 lead after doubles. Sam Frank and Megan Gaard defeated Jones and Rossman 8-3 at first doubles. Marianne Barau and Alex Erickson defeated Huether and Brandell 8-0 at second doubles. At third doubles, Hoffman and Seipel were unable to close the Gusties lead to 2-1. They were defeated by Megan Born and Mary Roop 8-1. The teams headed into singles with Gustavus two wins away from going to the championship. Barau defeated Jones 6-1, 6-2 at second singles while Julie Bardenwerper defeated junior
MacKenzie Rayman (Burnsville, MN, Apple Valley) 6-1, 6-1 to end the match.
Saint Benedict finished the season with a final record of 15-8 overall, and 13-7 in the MIAC.
