The College of Saint Benedict Blazer tennis team came from behind to defeat the University of St. Thomas 5-4 Saturday afternoon at Gold's Gym in Sartell, Minn.
The Blazers picked up only one victory in doubles play, as the No. 2 team of senior
Kylie Huether and junior
Aly Brandell defeated Madeline Gail and Lauren Schultz 8-6. The Nos. 1 (juniors
Lauren Jones and
Sarah Rossman) and 3 (junior
Megan Seipel and first-year
Jamie Hoffman) both fell in their matches, 9-7 and 8-5, respectively.
CSB bounced back nicely at the beginning of singles competition, as Huether won 6-3, 6-1 over Alex Frank at No. 1, and Brandell rallied to beat Gail 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2.
After Hoffman lost the first set against Schultz at No. 5, she stormed back in the second set and stole the tie breaker to win 2-6, 7-5 (10-8). One victory away from clinching the match, Jones lost in a back-and-forth battle at No. 3 by a score of 6-4, 3-6, (10-8). Rossman couldn't seal the win at No. 4 either, falling in straight sets to Rachel Wright 6-4, 6-3.
In the deciding contest at No. 6, Seipel dropped the first set 6-3. She quickly turned around, though, and eventually took control of the match with a 6-4 win in the second and quickly winning the tie breaker 10-2.
