The College of Saint Benedict Blazer tennis team (6-2 overall, 2-1 MIAC) defeated conference opponent Macalester (6-4 overall, 0-3 MIAC) 8-1 Saturday morning in Sartell, MN.
The second doubles duo of senior
Kylie Huether (Sioux Falls, SD , Washington) and
Alyson Brandell (Elk River, MN, Elk River) played their first conference of the season together and earned a strong 8-0 win to give Saint Benedict and early 1-0 lead. Macalester evened the score at one a piece by defeating junior
Megan Seipel (New London, MN, New London-Spicer) and first-year
Jamie Hoffman (Bemidji, MN, Bemidji) 8-5 at third doubles. Juniors
Lauren Jones (Ogden, UT, Saint Joseph Catholic) and
Sarah Rossman (Rochester, MN, Lourdes) gave the Blazers a 2-1 lead after a tough fought match at first doubles, defeating Paige Schaefer and Abby Citrin 8-6.
At singles, Hoffman picked up her seventh win of the season at fifth singles, defeating Louise Dickson 6-0, 6-1. HItting great groundstrokes and controlling the play, Jones extended the Blazers lead to 4-1 at third singles defeating Lauren Dutkiewcz 6-1, 6-4. Saint Benedict sealed the win at first singles. Huether played an outstanding match while giving her opponent little to work with. She defeated Schaefer 6-2, 6-1. Brandell picked up the Blazers next point at second singles in a tiebreaker, defeating Citrin 3-6, 6-0, 10-7. Rossman continued her perfect play at singles defeating her Carmen Whitehead 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles. Seipel earned the singles sweep for Saint Benedict in a tough sixth singles win, defeating Maddie Vargo 6-4, 6-3.
Saint Benedict travels to Winona, MN to play Winona State University at 9 a.m. and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 27th.
