The College of Saint Benedict Blazer volleyball team (18-11 overall, 8-3 MIAC) defeated fifth seeded Gustavus Adolphus College (20-10 overall, 7-4 MIAC) 3-1 Tuesday night in St. Joseph, Minn.
Saint Benedict took an early 1-0 lead as they won a close first set 25-21. The Blazers compiled 17 kills and generated a .306 kill percentage during the first set. CSB extended their lead to two with a 25-20 second set victory. Gustavus connected on only six kills and was held to a -.103 kill percentage. The Gusties brought the match within one with a close 25-22 third set victory. Saint Benedict came out hard in the fourth and took the match, beating Gustavus 25-15 in the fourth set. The Blazers earned 19 kills and compiled a .309 kill percentage in the third set.
Leading the Blazers on the attack in tonight's match was sophomore outside hitter
Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake). Alm earned a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs, as well as producing a .310 kill percentage. Senior outside hitter
Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forest Lake) also earned a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. First-year middle blocker
Callie Neumann (Winsted, MN, Holy Trinity) had 11 kills and a .240 kill percentage. Sophomore libero
Chelsea Rachel (Maple Lake, MN, Maple Lake) produced 17 digs tonight for the Blazers as first-year setter
Taya Kockelman (Minneota, MN, Minneota) notched 37 set assists.
Saint Benedict returns to action in the MIAC semifinalsat 7 pm on Thursday, November 3rd, in Moorhead, Minn. as they take on first seed Concordia (23-3 overall, 10-1 MIAC).
