Blazer Volleyball Conquers Cardinals 3-1

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer volleyball team (12-6 overall, 4-1 MIAC) defeated conference opponent Saint Mary's University (12-8 overall, 1-4 MIAC) 3-1 Friday night in Winona, Minn.

Saint Benedict hit the court running in Friday's match and took an early 1-0 lead after defeating the Cardinals 25-17 in the first set. The Blazer s compiled 16 kills while earning a .314 kill percentage and holding Saint Mary's to a .040 kill percentage with seven kills. The Cardinals evened the match at 1-1 as they took the second set 25-22. Saint Benedict notched 15 kills and a .200 kill percentage. The Blazers captured the third set 25-22 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. During the third set, CSB held Saint Mary's to a .114 kill percentage. The Blazers secured the win in the fourth set with a strong 25-18 win. Saint Benedict earned 18 kills and generated a .324 kill percentage while holding the Cardinals to a .154 kill percentage.

Leading the Blazers on the attack was first-year outside hitter Alexa Rinde (Minnetonka, MN, Orono). Rinde had 22 kills in Friday's match and earned a .395 kill percentage. Senior outside hitter Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forest Lake) notched 12 kills while compiling a .233 kill percentage. First-year setter Taya Kockelman (Minneota, MN, Minneota) had 32 set assists for the Blazers as fellow setter sophomore Kathyrn Gaydos (Savage, MN, Prior Lake) earned 22. Leading the Blazer defense was sophomore libero Chelsea Rachel (Maple Lake, MN, Maple Lake). Rachel produced 14 digs for the Blazers.

Saint Benedict returns to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday October 8th, in Northfield, Minn. as they take on conference opponent St. Olaf College (10-10 overall, 2-3 MIAC).
