Blazer Volleyball Earns Eighth Conference Win, Defeats Gustavus 3-2

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer volleyball team (17-9 overall, 8-1 MIAC) defeated conference opponent Gustavus (18-8 overall, 5-3 MIAC) 3-2 Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph, Minn.

Gustavus took an early lead with a 26-24 win over the Blazers to take the first set. Saint Benedict earned 17 kills but came up just short of the Gusties. The Blazers hit the court running in the second set to win 25-15 as they held Gustavus to a -.036 kill percentage. The Gusties took the next set 25-23 to take a 2-1 lead but Saint Benedict answered back with a hard earned 25-18 fourth set victory to force a fifth set.  CSB carried their momentum into the final set and took the match with a 15-8 win over Gustavus. Saint Benedict earned 64 kills in today's match and held Gustavus to a .122 kill percentage. The Blazers also earned 10 aces and had no receiving errors.

Leading the Blazers on the attack in today's match was first-year outside hitter Alexa Rinde (Minnetonka, MN, Orono). Rinde notched 20 kills and earned a .234 kill percentage as well as three block assists. Senior outside hitter Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forest Lake) had 16 kills with a .234 kill percentage and nine digs.  Sophomore outside hitter Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake) earned a double-double in today's match with 14 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore setter Kathyrn Gaydos (Savage, MN, Prior Lake) compiled 33 set assists and fellow setter, first-year Taya Kockelman (Minneota, MN, Minneota) produced 18. Leading the Blazers on the defense were sophomores Chelsea Rachel (Maple Lake, MN, Maple Lake) and Kendra Coleman (Pelican Rapids,MN, Pelican Rapids). Rachel produced 27 kills playing libero as Coleman earned four blocks at middle blocker.

Saint Benedict returns to action when they take on conference opponent Bethel (20-7 overall, 7-2 MIAC) at 7 pm on Wednesday October 26th, in St. Paul, Minn.
