The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (4-6 overall, 1-0 MIAC) cruised past Hamline University (5-5 overall, 0-1 MIAC) in three quick sets with scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-14 in the Blazers' first match of MIAC play.
The Blazers dominated the first set, picking up a 8-4 lead to start. Then CSB went on a 13-6 run to make the score 21-10. The Pipers, however, stayed in the set, stringing together six consecutive points to bring the score within five at 21-16. But the Blazers prevailed, going on a 4-0 run to end the set with a score of 25-16.
The second set began nearly identical to the first, with a 8-4 Blazer start followed by a 13-7 run to put CSB ahead 21-11. The Blazers continued to hold off the Pipers, going on to win the set 25-14.
CSB controlled the pace of the third set, coming out strong with a 9-3 lead. A .333 hitting percentage helped the Blazers maintain their distance as they went on to win 25-14.
Leading the Blazers was sophomore middle blocker
Shannon Bassett (Eagan, MN, Eagan), who totalled 11 kills off of 21 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter
Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forrest Lake) added 10 kills, while first-year setter
Kathyrn Gaydos (Savage, MN, Prior Lake) contributed 35 set assists. Senior middle block
Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, MN, Buffalo) led CSB with a .467 hitting percentage off of seven kills. The Pipers were led by outside hitter Molly Schroeder who had nine kills.
Up next for the Blazers is their first of two home tournaments this season. The CSB Holiday InnVitational begins on Fri., Sept. 17 and continues through Sat., Sept. 18. Blazers first compete against St. Catherine at 5 p.m. on Friday.
