Blazers Open Conference Play With Win

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (4-2 overall, 1-0 MIAC) beat conference opponent Augsburg College (1-2-2 overall, 0-1-0 MIAC) 2-0 in Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday night.

Junior forward Heather Beshears (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove)gave Saint Benedict the lead 15 minutes into the game when she connected on a centering pass from first-year forward Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, IA, Xavier).  The Blazers second goal came at the 63rd minute mark when sophomore midfield/forwardJess Pellegrene (Maple Grove, MN, Totino-Grace) scored off a rebound from a shot by  senior midfielder Emily Willaert (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola).  

The Blazers outshot the Auggies 24-9, 16 of which came in the second half.  Augsburg goalkeeper Diana Bocklund recorded 13 saves on the night.  Senior goalkeeper Maija Schmelzer (Rochester, MN, John Marshall)was perfect in net for the Blazers stopping all four of Augsburg shots on net.

The Blazers host conference opponent St. Olaf (4-1 overall, 0-0 MIAC) on Saturday September 18th at 1 pm in St. Joseph, MN.
