Soccer Downs St. Scholastica in Regular Season Finale

Bennies secure 12th win of season, most since 2022

DULUTH, Minn. - Playing its final regular season game, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team secured a 3-1 victory at The College of St. Scholastica Saturday, Oct. 31. With the win, the Bennies improve to 12-1-3 overall, 7-1-3 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action. It marks the most wins in a season since 2022.

First-year Eva Gower (Plymouth, Minn./Orono) recorded a brace in the game to lead the Bennies to victory. Fellow first-year Lilly DeRosier (Baxter, Minn./Blaine) added the other goal of the game, while tacking on an assist for a three-point showing. Juniors Gabby Fernholz (Rice, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) and Sienna Chase (Tustin, Calif./Orange Lutheran) each notched an assist.

In goal, senior Rhianna Anya (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson Sr.) registered the win after playing the first 45 minutes. First-year Samantha Hartnett (Saint Michael, Minn./St. Michael Albertville) checked in after halftime, giving up the lone goal of the game off a penalty kick. She finished with CSB's lone save, as the Bennie defense limited the Saints (6-10-2, 2-7-2 MIAC) to just four shots in the game, two of which were on goal.

Saint Ben's finished the match with 35 shots, 17 on frame, while holding a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. CSS notched the advantage in saves, 14-1.

The Bennies needed just 10:27 to crack the scoreboard first. Gower and DeRosier traded passes between one another until Gower found herself open from 20 yards out. The Plymouth, Minn. native, who has already proven she can bury a shot from anywhere, put one into the bottom left corner of the goal to give the visitors a quick lead.

Saint Benedict made it a 2-nil lead at the 25-minute mark, as DeRosier continued to carve up the Saints defense. Fernholz sent a cross towards the goal that the CSS goalkeeper came out to try and make a play on. Winning the battle against the keeper, DeRosier stole the ball before she could make a clean stop and sent it easily into an open net for her sixth goal of the season.

Continuing to pour on the goals in the opening half, Gower net her second of the game just three minutes after DeRosier's boot. Chase gave the ball to Gower off a throw-in, and the first-year displayed her dribbling abilities in a one-on-one opportunity with her defender. After clearing room for herself, Gower roped a cross-pitch shot into the back of the net for her fourth brace of the season.

The lone goal for the home team came in the 47th minute, as St. Scholastica used a penalty kick to its advantage, avoiding a shutout.

CSB secured the fourth seed in the MIAC Playoff Championships, earning hosting rights for the quarterfinals Tuesday, Nov. 3. The Bennies will host fifth-seed Macalester College for a 2 p.m. contest. The first 200 students (Bennies or Johnnies) will get into the soccer game for free, courtesy of CSB Student Senate.
