The College of Saint Benedict Blazer tennis team (6-4 MIAC, 12-6 overall) swept the University of St. Thomas (7-3 MIAC, 11-6 overall) 5-0 in the first round of the MIAC Playoffs on Friday afternoon. Sine the match was played indoors, the teams only played to decision.
The Saint Benedict doubles teams fought off St. Thomas to jump out to a 3-0 match lead. Senior
Rachel Tiegs (Rochester, MN, Lourdes) and sophomore
Lauren Jones (Ogden, UT, Saint Joseph Catholic) topped Alex Frank and Allie Brudoldt 8-3 at #1, junior
Kylie Huether (Sioux Falls, SD , Washington) and sophomore
Alyson Brandell (Elk River, MN, Elk River) tipped Madeline Gail and Hadley Syverud 8-4 at #2, and at #3, sophomore
Sarah Rossman (Rochester, MN, Lourdes) and junior
Elissa Husby (Duluth, MN, Marshall) slipped past Suzanne Brophy and Mary Allen to gain the 9-8 (7-3) victory.
It didn't take long for the Blazers to clinch the first round win, as Tiegs defeated Frank 7-5, 6-2 at #1 singles, and Huether rounded out the team victory by beating Brufoldt 6-3, 6-1 at #2 singles.
CSB will meet Gustavus Adolphus in the second round of the playoffs tomorrow, Saturday, May 8th at 9 am in St. Peter, MN.
