The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team's (11-7-1) season came to an end Wednesday afternoon in Northfield, MN. Carleton College (14-2-1) defeated the Blazers 2-1 in overtime in the semi-finals of the MIAC playoffs.
The game was deadlocked through the first half. Neither team had scored a goal, with Carleton outshooting Saint Benedict 6-3. Carleton went on the board first, sixteen minutes into the second half, when Niki Tomita passed a through ball to Marlena Hartman-Filson. Hartman-Filson shot the ball off the far post and into the net. Saint Benedict answered back less than a minute later on a goal from senior midfielder
Emily Willaert (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola). Willaert received a through ball from junior forward
Heather Beshears (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove), which she preceded to bury in the back of the net.
Neither team scored again in regulation, sending the game to overtime. At the end of the second half Carleton was outshooting the Blazers 15-11. With ten seconds left to play in the first overtime it appeared that the game would have to be settled in a second overtime. Carleton's Hartman-Filson crossed the ball into the box. Tomita redirected the ball towards the net and hit the post. Tomita tried to put in her rebound, but was stopped by the Blazer defense. With one second remaing in the first overtime, Carleton's Liz Arakaki punched the ball into the net from under a Blazer defender.

Maija Schmelzer (Rochester, MN, John Marshall)made six saves for the Blazers. Beth Ashinsky made three for Carleton. Carleton outshot the Blazers 21-12.
