The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (8-6 overall, 5-3 MIAC) defeated conference opponent Bethel University (5-7-2 overall, 2-5-1 MIAC) 2-0 Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph, MN.
The Blazers first goal came half way into the first half on a penalty kick from senior midfield
Emily Willaert (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola). Willaert buried the ball in the bottom right hand corner of the net. The Blazers ended the first half up 1-0 despite being outshot 11-7. Ten minutes into the second half sophomore midfielder
Hannah Frost (Mahtomedi, MN, Mahtomedi) put the Blazers up by two. Frost gained control of the ball after sophmore midfielder
Jess Pellegrene (Maple Grove, MN, Totino-Grace) shot was blocked by a Bethel defender.
Senior goalkeeper
Maija Schmelzer (Rochester, MN, John Marshall) made 12 saves for the Blazers and earned her eigth shutout of the season. Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Riggs made 13 saves for Bethel.
Saint Benedict travels to Winona, MN on Saturday, October 23rd, to play conference opponent Saint Mary's University (7-6-1 overall, 4-3-1 MIAC) at 5 pm.
