Blazers Cruise to Another MIAC Win

The College of Saint Benedict Blazer soccer team (6-6 overall, 3-3 MIAC) defeated MIAC opponent Hamline University (4-8 overall, 0-6 MIAC) 6-0 Saturday afternoon in St. Paul, MN.

The Blazers first goal came less than five minutes into the first half when first-year forward Colleen Bouchard (Cedar Rapids, IA, Xavier) connected on an assist from junior defender Stephanie Gibbs (Plymouth, MN, Robbinsdale Armstrong).  Fifteen minutes later the Blazers extended their lead to two when junior forward Heather Beshears (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) buried the ball in the back of the net on an assist from Bouchard.  The Blazers ended the first half up by two goals and had outshot Hamline eight to three.  Less than ten minutes into the second half, sophomore forward Clare Murn (Canton, GA, St. Cloud Technical) gave the Blazers a three goal lead.  Bouchard assisted on the goal.  Beshears earned her second goal of the game at the 70 minute mark when first-year forward Leah Christensen (Waconia, MN, Waconia), passed a through ball between Hamline's defenders.  Also scoring for the Blazers was first-year defender Kerrie Dingmann (Wayzata, MN, Orono High School) on an assist from Gibbs.  With less than three minutes to play, sophomore forward Jess Pellegrene (Maple Grove, MN, Totino-Grace) scored the Blazers sixth and final goal, with the assist going to senior midfield Emily Willaert (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola).

Senior goalkeeper Maija Schmelzer (Rochester, MN, John Marshall) earned her sixth shutout of the season for the Blazers.

Saint Benedict hosts conference opponent St. Catherine Univeristy (6-6-1 overall, 2-4 MIAC) on Tuesday, October 12th, at 4 pm in St. Joseph, MN.
