Blazers Overcome Penalties to Salvage Tie

An ice hockey game between the College of Saint Benedict and Augsburg college provided a little of everything for the announced crowd of 93 as the two teams tied 2-2 in OT at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first period, despite the Blazers holding the shot advantage against Augsburg 11-5.  As the second period got underway, sophomore forward Amie Ernst (North Mankato, MN, Mankato Loyola) wasted little time getting the Blazers on the scoreboard, scoring her third goal of the season two minutes into the period. Ernst was assisted on the play by sophomore forward Kerri Graske (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater Area), her third assist on the year. The goal solidified the Blazers as a dangerous second period team, with six of the team's nine goals this season coming during that period.

Any momentum the Blazers had seized up until that point slowly shifted to the Auggies side as Saint Benedict was called for eight straight penalties between the rest of the second period and the start of the third. And despite the stellar play of sophomore goaltender Lauren Herzog (Mendota Heights, MN, Convent of the Visitation), Augsburg was able to sneak two power play goals in, putting them up 2-1.

As the game progressed to the last minute of play it looked as though the Blazers were going to have to continue to wait to secure their first MIAC win of the season. Trying to give his team some sort of an advantage, head coach Pat Michaud pulled Herzog with just over 50 seconds left in the game leaving the Blazer net wide open. Saint Benedict was able to capitalize on the one person advantage when Graske evened the game at 2 with her first goal of the season; beautifully assisted by Ernst and sophomore center Jennifer Yelle (Coon Rapids, MN, Coon Rapids). As time expired in the game the two remained tied at 2-2 where they would stay as neither team was able to score in the five minute overtime period.

“I thought this team showed heart and character to rise up at the end of the game and earn a tough tie on the road,” Michaud said about the Blazers Friday night heroics.

The two teams return to action tomorrow night at the MAC in Saint Cloud. The puck drops at 7:30 pm with both teams still looking for their first MIAC win of the season.
