The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (16-3 overall, 3-0 MIAC) won their ninth match in a row and fought off tenacious Augsburg College (8-7 overall, 0-2 MIAC) in five sets to win 25-17, 29-32, 25-18, 13-25 and 15-8.
Saint Benedict attacked the Auggies right from the get-go in the first set, jumping out to leads of 7-2 and 19-12. Sophomore player
Amber Wortz (Fairfax, MN, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop) recorded three of her team high seven services aces in the first set to pace the Blazers, The second set was going in favor of CSB, claiming a 24-18 lead. But four straight attack errors by the Blazers allowed Augsburg to charge its way back in the set, and eventually tied the contest 25-25. The MIAC rivals exchanged points to notch the score at 29-29. But junior hitter Barbara Simmons was able to serve the Auggies to two straight points and win the set.
The Blazers did not waste any time in set three by going on an 8-0 run led by junior hitter
Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, MN, Hibbing). Jaynes recorded the last two points in the set for CSB with two of her 18 kills. Augsburg did not falter, though, and played a dominant set, ending the fourth set on a 17-6 run to tie the match at two. In the final set of the match, the Blazers shot its way to a 7-3 lead. The Auggies clawed back and narrowed the score to 9-7, but CSB persevered and ended the set and match with a 6-1 rally. In addition to her team best 18 kills, the Blazers' Jaynes recorded 24 digs. Calleigh Brown (Buffalo, MN, Buffalo) added 16 kills and five blocks, and junior setter
Beth Hanson (Fairbault, MN, Bethlehem Academy)guided CSB with 46 assists. The Blazers return home for their next MIAC matchup against St. Olaf on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
