Blazers Fight off Oles, 3-2

The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team (17-3 overall, 4-0 MIAC) defeated St. Olaf (12-8 overall, 2-2 MIAC) in a five set thriller, 25-13, 25-18, 21-25, 22-25, 15-8.
Saint Benedict cruised to a first set victory started by a 9-2 run at the beginning of the contest.  The Oles fought back in the second set to lead 14-15, but the Blazers went on an 11-3 run to close out the set, thanks to serves by junior hitter Emma Jaynes (Hibbing, MN, Hibbing)(16 kills, 25 digs), junior libero Andrea Millerbernd (Littlefork, MN, Littlefork-Big Falls)(19 digs) and sophomore starter Amber Wortz (Fairfax, MN, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop) (17 kills, 10 digs).
The Oles did not allow CSB to close out the match right away and came back to win the next two sets.  Sophomore hitter Kim Smisek (15 kills, 14 digs) and sophomore setter Kelly Prunty (42 assists) paced St Olaf in order to advance to the fifth and final set.
CSB was able to jump to a 5-1 lead and never looked back, taking the set and match with a service ace by Wortz.  Junior setter Beth Hanson (Fairbault, MN, Bethlehem Academy)(53 assists) and first-year hitter Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forrest Lake)(12 kills, 13 digs) also contributed key efforts for Saint Benedict.
The Blazers continue MIAC play versus Saint Mary's at home on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.
