ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – In her senior season with the College of Saint Benedict swimming and diving team, Laura Peterson has been a leader for the Blazers at each meet so far this season.
Peterson, who focuses on the butterfly and short races for the Blazers, has recorded at least two top-five finishes at all six meets CSB has participated in, and she has won an event in four of the six meets. Peterson added another win and two other individual top-10 finishes to her 2014-15 total Saturday afternoon at the Meet of the Saints. For her performance, she has been named the Blazer Athlete of the Week.
Peterson, a Plymouth, Minn., native, won her sixth individual event of the year and eighth total at the Meet of the Saints, hosted by St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. She took first in the 200 butterfly in 2:16.85 – her best time so far this season.
The Wayzata High School graduate also took second in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.35 and 10
th in the 50 freestyle in 26.86 seconds, and was part of the Blazers’ fifth-place 400 medley relay squad (4:17.42).
The win marked the second in the 200 fly for Peterson so far this season. She also has three wins in the 100 butterfly and one in the 50 butterfly, and was a part of the Blazers' winning 200 medley relay team in a dual against Concordia and the 200 freestyle relay squad that picked up a win against St. Kate's. Peterson already has her name in the CSB record books – she swam the second-fastest 100 butterfly (59.37) and third-best 200 butterfly (2:12.5) at the 2014 MIAC Championships – and is looking to move up even higher before she graduates. Peterson, who is also part of the 200 medley relay team that holds the schools record and the second-fastest 400 medley relay squad in Blazer history, and the Blazers host Carleton at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24. The MIAC dual is one of three events left before the MIAC Championships, which are Feb. 19-21 at the U of M Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
