ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a slow start against Carleton last week, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team needed a spark heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
That’s where Carla Meyer came in.
Meyer started the fourth quarter with a three and helped the Bennies turn a five-point deficit into a 12-point win against the Knights – and recorded a new career-best scoring attempt in the process. For her big game, Meyer is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
Saint Benedict – which was playing short-handed – was down 32-25 at halftime, and Meyer headed into the break with just seven points, including just two in the second quarter. The Bennies clawed their way back into the game in the third, and in the fourth they took over.
Meyer started the fourth quarter with a three, and scored eight of the team’s 28 points as CSB pulled away for a 67-52 win. She hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 47-47, and had the assist on Sophia Jonas’ three that put the Bennies up for good with five minutes left to play.
Meyer finished the game with a career-high 19 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, and a career-best nine rebounds. Wednesday in a short-handed loss to Bethel, she added nine points and five rebounds to her weekly stat line to finish the week averaging 14 points and seven rebounds per game. She also went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line.
Meyer and her teammates are back in action Monday, Jan. 10, when they head to Northfield for a 7 p.m. game against St. Olaf. Spectators must be on a pass list put together by CSB basketball coaches in order to be admitted into the game.
