ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team seems to have made a New Year’s resolution to not lose.
The Blazers are on a three-game winning streak and haven’t lost a game yet in 2015, which has pushed them up to a three-way tie for second place in the MIAC.
A big part of that success as of late has been senior forward Elena Koch. Koch led the team in scoring in a dominant win over Hamline, and put up good numbers against Carleton in the Blazers’ second win of the week last week.
For her consistent play, Koch has been named the Blazer Athlete of the Week for the first team this season.
In CSB’s first game of the week last week, Koch, a Farmington, Minn., native, scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Blazers to an 85-68 win at Hamline. She finished the week with four points, six rebounds and two assists to help Saint Benedict beat Carleton College 58-49 at Claire Lynch.
Koch finished the week averaging 11 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. She is currently fourth on the team in scoring at 7.4 points per game and is also averaging 4.3 rebounds per game. Koch also has 17 assists and seven steals to her name.
The Blazers are currently 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC and in a three-way tie for second in the league. Gustavus and Concordia also have 4-2 MIAC records. Saint Benedict tries for a fourth straight win Wednesday when it travels to Winona, Minn., to take on Saint Mary’s, which is tied for fifth with a 3-3 conference mark.
