After a fifth-place finish in the MIAC in 2012, the Blazers headed into 2013 hoping to improve upon that performance. They returned three All-Region runners from the year before in senior Kelsie Larson, junior Manon Gammon-Deering and sophomore Cathleen Gross. The Blazers exceeded expectations by placing third this year at the MIAC Championships.
Â
Junior Manon Gammon-DeeringThe squad started off their competitive season with a third-place finish at the SJU Invite, and then followed it up with a sixth-place finish out of 26 teams at the National Catholic Invite in South Bend, Ind. In that race the Blazers were helped by a 21st-place performance by Gammon-Deering and a 26th-place performance by junior Bailey Drewes.Â
Through the rest of the regular season, the Blazers finished in the top-third of all their meets. At the midseason St. Kate's meet on Oct. 12th, they earned their first team win of the season, scoring 44 points to tie Luther for first-place. In that race all seven Blazers finished in the top 20, and three in the top-ten. Gammon-Deering led the team again, finishing fourth overall with a 4K time of 15:06.Â
Heading into the MIAC Championship meet, the Blazers were coming off of a seventh-place performance out of thirty teams at the Tori Neubauer Invite in Eau Claire Wisconsin. Of the nine MIAC teams in that meet, the Blazers finished second, coming in one slot behind sixth-place St. Olaf. The Blazers were again led by Gammon-Deering, who ran a career-best 22:48 6K to finish 23rd overall at the meet, which featured runners from three D-I schools.Â
After finishing fourth last year, the Blazers ran to a comfortable third-place performance at the MIAC Championships. That third-place performance was the highest a Blazer cross-country team has finished since the 2002 season, when they also finished 3rd. Gammon-Deering again led the team, running a 6K time of 23:03 to lead the team and earn an All-MIAC selection. Larson and junior Jenna O'Donnel finished 25th and 24th respectively to claim the last two All-MIAC Honorable Mention spots.
Sophomore Sam WomeldorfAfter finishing eighth at the NCAA Central Region Championships the previous year, the Blazers rounded out the year with a sixth-place performance at the meet in 2013. Just as she had all season, Gammon-Deering led the team, finishing 29th overall with a 23:25 6K time. The team was also helped by a pack-running mentality, with each scoring member of its roster finishing within 19 seconds of each other. After Gammon-Deering was Larson (23:36), O'Donnell (23:41), Goodman (23:43), and junior Kathryn Keller-Miller (23:44). The Blazers will return five of its seven runners from that meet heading into next year (2014).
The JV squad also provided excitement about next year's squad. At the Fall Finale JV-only invite, they finished first out of six teams, sweeping the top seven spots to put up a perfect score of 15. End of the year JV invite wins are often followed up by varsity wins in the following year. Top returners from that race will be first-year Ali Kosobud and sophomore Sam Womeldorf.
